Yesterday, due to the torrential rain in the area caused by tropical storm Calvin, various areas of the Refinery in Salina Cruz were flooded. Consequently, the procedure for the safe shutdown of operations was initiated.
The flooding caused wastewater dams to overflow and created an oil spill. Preliminary findings show that this product reached ignition point due to the flooding, causing a fire to break out.
Currently, seven persons are receiving medical care. None of them is seriously injured.
Pemex firefighting staff is performing the necessary procedures to put out the fire contained within the Refinery’s facilities. The Director of Operations, in charge of the National Refining System, and the under director of the Safety and Environmental Protection System are on their way to the Refinery. State health and civil protection authorities have also been notified. The Mutual Aid Committee, in which local civil protection, police and firefighting organizations, as well as Pemex officials participate, has also been activated.
The development of this story will be updated throughout the day.
